Best Time To Visit Chardham

Uttarakhand is known for being a treasure trove for devotees, and one of its hidden gems is the Char Dham – a pilgrimage circuit that includes four holy temples: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Badrinath, and Kedarnath. These temples are only open for half a year, from April or May until October or November.

The exact dates are determined by the Mandir Samiti on the auspicious day of Maha Shivaratri and are announced by the committee. However, the dates are ultimately determined by the priest of the Bhimashankar Linga Temple. Due to their high altitude, the Char Dham temples experience heavy snowfall during the winter season, which forces the committee to close the shrines.

This makes the months from April/May to October/November the best times to visit Char Dham. During the winter season, when the hallowed gates of Kedarnath Temple remain closed, the idol of Kedarnath is shifted to Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath.

Similarly, the idols of Yamunotri, Badrinath, and Gangotri are kept and worshipped in Shani Dev Temple in Kharsali, Vasu Dev Temple in Joshimath, and Mukhimath Temple in Mukba respectively. Each year, Char Dham Yatra attracts a large number of pilgrims, and this number is increasing year by year.
